Symbolic Meaning of the Sunflower

Welcome to my sunflower site! The sunflower is a symbol of good luck, wealth and ambition, warmth, abundance, longevity, and prosperity. The sunflower encourages you to radiate who you are and what you are doing; Shine love on those you care about. Be a strong, paternal figure. Support all efforts to grow. Get back to the simple life, simple pleasure, where simple things can be enjoyed. The Sun gives you strength and tells you that no matter where you go or what you do, your positive and radiant energy will follow you and bring you happiness and joy. Because of this, the sunflower has recently been adopted as a symbol of hope and faith.

A PLACE WHERE SUNFLOWERS GROW
How to grow Sunflowers
Sunflowers are an easy, durable and stress free plant to grow. Just plant in a sunny spot add water, sit back and watch it grow! Getting StartedIt is very important to carefully consider the types of sunflowers you intend to grow and where and how you intend to grow them. Needless to say planning is very important. Pay attention to the height of the plants, and the time to bloom, and the type of flowers.Consider whether you are planting for cut flowers, or planting to harvest and roast seeds for eating. Maybe you want to plant your sunflowers in pots or create a barrier of sunflowers between you and your neighbors. You just need to have some idea about what you want from your garden. Seed Starter (optional)One way to ensure even growth and the strongest fastest growing plants is to start growing your seeds using coir pellets before planting. By germinating your seeds before planting you can pick out the seeds that will provide the best chance of success. Typically, the first seeds to germinate will be your strongest best thriving plants. Here is what you need to germinate your seeds prior to planting:• coir pellets;• plastic container;Follow the directions shown below. You can use peat pots or coir pellets. I used both and prefer Coir Pellets. Coir pellets are a great medium for starting seeds or propagating cuttings, because coir is a biodegradable peat alternative made from coconut husk fibers, a renewable by-product of the coconut harvest. These compressed pellets are particularly convenient because you don't need soil or pots. Just drop the pellet into warm water and it expands to several times its original 1-3/4" x 3/8" size, making it ready for planting immediately. A fine mesh covering holds it all together. When the plants have grown to size, you can drop the whole thing directly into the ground or into a planter. Courtesy of: www.leevalleytools.comSoil ConsiderationsSunflower plants are like any other plant. The better the soil the more heartier and robust the plant. Experience shows that sunflowers like a soil that drains well and contains a lot of mulch. About two weeks before planting some growers mix a bit of steer manure into the soil where they will be planting. Sunflowers do well in many different soil conditions, so do not get too hung up on your soil conditions. If you have plants that are doing well now in an area where you want to plant your sunflowers, then your sunflowers will do just as well.Sun and WaterThe operative word here is SUN. Like its name the sunflower needs plenty of direct sun; a minimum of 6hrs a day to grow healthy plants. If you plant sunflowers out of direct sun light they will stretch for the sun. They will become so spindly stretching for the sun eventually they will fall to the ground. I recommend full sun for the better part of the day to grow strong healthy sunflowers. * It takes 60 - 90 days for your sunflower to grow.* To keep those pesky insects and curious animals from eating your sunflower seeds; wrap cheese cloth over the head of the sunflower. When your sunflower has bloomed, I invite to you to take a picture of your sunny bright sunflower and email to: siouxsie_siouxsiesunflowers.com
Sunflower Paintings
Sunflowers are not a dainty flower; so don't expect my paintings of them to be dainty! Rather they are bold and crude like crunchy, nutritious granola. My sunflower paintings don't stoop nor creep about; rather they stand tall, solid and forthright whether alone or in the cheerful company of its brethren.I paint because I need to express emotions that I haven't found words to describe. Color guides me when making decisions about my work. There is no particular technique that I employ; rather I begin a painting by determining what color I feel to paint with and I go from there.Although most of my paintings in this collection are in acrylic, I have since changed to using oils and I am enjoying it. I used to prefer to finger-paint my sunflowers in oil. I'm quite tactile with my paints squeezing a tube of mushy, deep, bold, pure color, dabbing the paint on the canvas with my fingers letting each finger glide and dance across the surface until I find my image. I now have become more aware of the importance of having proper brushes and to pay closer attention to brush strokes. I still find it challenging to focus on my painting in its entirity. For I often find myself getting lost in the color. This is especially so since I moved into working with oils. The colors just seem so deep, creamier and richer then acrylic.I enjoy painting sunflowers; it is a nurturing process, which doesn't allow me to stay in negative emotions for long for the sunflower, uplifts the spirit with its friendly and cheerful face, which always follows the sun.Siouxsie!
